Youth News, 11/29

Hi everyone - This is an important post to read since it contains a look-ahead through the month of December.  Plus, your feedback is needed regarding December 30...see below!

December UMYF Schedule:

  • December 2: No UMYF due to Charlotte trip
  • December 9: Mt. Pleasant Christmas Parade!  Come at 4pm for pizza, enjoy the parade, and stick around afterwards for hot chocolate and cookies.  Families are invited!  Please bring a plate of cookies to share.
  • December 16: UMYF Christmas Party from 6-8pm in the CLLC.  Plan to bring non-perishable food items to restock the pantry for The Table!
  • December 23: No UMYF
  • December 30: Will you be in town for a UMYF meeting from 6-8pm on 12/30?  I'm thinking an open gym time with a snack supper - just some time to hang out with friends during your Christmas break.  Let me know if you're interested by emailing econnell@hibbenumc.org.  If we have 10 or more people interested, we will meet!
Revolution 2013!  The details are still coming together for our trip, but PLEASE go ahead and mark your calendars for February 15 -17 for Revolution 2013.  This is the state-wide youth conference held in Columbia each year.  It's often recognized by Hibben's youth as the most powerful and meaningful weekend of the entire year.  Don't miss it!  Cost and other details will follow shortly and scholarship money will be available if you need it.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

If you're like me, you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  It was nice to have a couple of days away from classrooms and offices, to spend time being thankful, watching football, or shopping.

Of all the fun times I had during Thanksgiving 2012, our Charlie Brown Thanksgiving ranks right up there as one of my favorites.  Here are some pictures of the night.  Great food prepared and enjoyed with even better friends.

The (ping-pong) table as we began gathering for our meal.

It was an authentic Charlie Brown Thanksgiving menu: pretzel sticks, jelly beans, popcorn, buttered toast, and ice cream sundaes.

Team Ice Cream Sundae finishes their prep work.

The hungry friends.

Megan's napkin folding talents came in handy.  Nice hats ladies!

The waiting was unbearable for some...

Hi Allie!

Dinner Needed!  Parents, we are in need of dinner this Sunday (11/25) at 5:30pm.  If your family can provide a meal for 20 people, please e-mail Elizabeth at econnell@hibbenumc.org.  This would be a GREAT way to get rid of all your leftover turkey!  : )

UMYF this Sunday (11/25): All 7th – 12th graders are invited this Sunday from 5:30 – 8pm (please note the earlier start time). It’s MOVIE NIGHT! We’ll be watching Joyeux Noel, an amazing movie which will help us understand more about what it means to have an “advent attitude.” Come for dinner, a movie based on a true story, and fun with friends.

Please note: There will be no UMYF on December 2.

Christmas Party:  Would you and your family like to host the UMYF Christmas Party at your home?  I'm looking for a place that can accommodate about 20 folks for a pot-luck meal, and the date is flexible.  If you'd like more details, please contact me: econnell@hibbenumc.org.

Safe Sanctuary revision: If you're a teen who likes to help in children's church or the nursery, this one's for you!  We've put a temporary hold on your participation with these ministries until we can offer a teen version of Safe Sanctuary training for you.  I'm working now on plans for short, basic training that will allow you to continue serving in all the ways you like.  Stay tuned for details, and until then enjoy a short "vacation" from volunteering with these ministries.

Trip to Charlotte: 2 spots remain for our trip to volunteer at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center in Charlotte, NC on December 1.  At the processing center, we’ll work to inspect and prepare the shoe boxes for shipment overseas. These volunteer spots are highly sought after by churches throughout the region, so huge thanks to Pam Thesing for securing space for Hibben’s youth.  Here are the trip highlights:
  • Fundraising opportunities are available to offset trip cost. See Elizabeth for details.
  • We’ll depart at 9:00am on Saturday, December 1 and return to Hibben around 4pm on Sunday, December 2.
  • We’ll have afternoon free time on Saturday before working our shift at the processing center from 6-10pm.

UMYF This Sunday (10/28):  All 7th - 12th graders are invited from 6-8pm in the CLLC for dinner and games, plus a prize for anyone who answers this riddle correctly:  I'm hard to tame and harder to bite, I reveal to all your heart's delight.  What am I?

Packing PARTY!  This Sunday (10/28) from noon - 3pm, be sure to come to Hibben's first EVER Operation Christmas Child packing party.  Everything a person needs to pack a box will be on-hand.  Bring $7 for shipping for each box you plan to pack.  I could also use help at the TOYS table, keeping everything stocked.  Hope to see you all there!

UMYF Next Sunday (11/4): We're celebrating the end of Daylight Savings Time with a campfire cookout on the front lawn of the church.  Invite a friend and come roast hot dogs over the fire pit, play some football, and enjoy S'mores and some campfire singing for dessert.  All 7th - 12th graders are invited from 6-8pm.

Parents!  Here's an idea for Christmas gift-giving: You can purchase a hardback daily devotional book for your child to begin encouraging them to spend time daily in God's word.  Books are customized for ages 7-8, ages 9 - 12, and ages 13- 18 and provide quick, easy to understand, and relevant daily devotions.  In Hibben's Educational Standards "expectation of daily devotion time" is outlined as a standard for all students, ages 7 - 18.  Help support that effort!  Books are $14 each and more information is available on bulletin boards at The Well and outside the sanctuary.  You may also make a donation of $14, which will be used to purchase books to ensure that all children at Hibben have access to daily devotional material.

Trip to Charlotte!  We’re getting a crew of 8 youth together to volunteer at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center in Charlotte, NC. At the processing center, we’ll work to inspect and prepare the shoe boxes for shipment overseas. Lunch with Dylan! Dylan Lipe, who has been living in Allendale since May, will be in Charleston for a brief visit and lunch this Saturday (10/27) at noon.  If you'd like to join me to say hello to Dylan, please call me at 813-8700 for details.  Keep Dylan in your prayers as he continues to transition to living in Allendale.

Christmas Party Location: Would you and your family like to host the youth group at your home for our Christmas Party in December?  Potential party dates include 12/16, 12/23, or another date if that works for your family.  I estimate a crowd of about 20 folks and a pot-luck style meal.  If you'd be interested in hosting or you'd like more information, please contact Elizabeth at econnell@hibbenumc.org or 884-9761.

Youth News, 10/18

Face Painting on Saturday:  The Fall Festival is THIS SATURDAY (10/20) from 10am-2pm, and the youth are in charge of face painting.  If you're able to come lend a helping hand, even for a few minutes, please do!  If you don't feel comfortable painting faces, come anyway and help out around the festival where needed.  If you have questions, please contact me at econnell@hibbenumc.org.

UMYF hits the road this Sunday(10/21). We’ll head out for dinner at Wendy’s (bring dinner money, please!) before going to the dollar store to purchase TOYS for Hibben’s OCC Packing Party. So far, we have $88.50 to spend, which has been collected from offerings during youth and children's Sunday School.  There's still a chance for you to give generously on Sunday morning.  I'd love to have over $100 to spend so we can be sure to have one toy for every box that will be packed at the Packing Party on October 28.  Departure will be promptly at 6pm from the CLLC and we’ll return at 8pm. Bring a friend!

Sr. High Sunday School: STUDENTS!  Please remember to bring your Generation Change journals with you to Sunday School!  You'll need them in order to get the most out of the class.  If you don't have a journal yet, you can get one on Sunday.

Operation Christmas Child Packing Party: I hope by now you've made plans to attend Hibben's first ever Packing Party, which will be held next Sunday, October 28, from noon - 3pm.  At the party, all the supplies a person needs to pack a box will be on-hand.  Our goal is to pack 600 boxes, so we need all hands on deck!  Please also remember to bring $7 per box to cover shipping.  If you use a credit or debit card, you can track your box to its final destination country.

Youth News, 9/27

UMYF this Sunday (9/30): It’s “Scramble Night”, where we throw the normal schedule out the window and do everything out of order. Seems like life’s that way sometimes, too, doesn’t it? In the midst of the mix-ups, we’ll discover how God helps us make sense of the madness. All 7th graders are invited from 6-8pm in the CLLC.

Sr. High Sunday School: A new study starts THIS SUNDAY(9/30)! All 9th – 12th graders are encouraged to attend our 8-week study of Dave Ramsey’s “Generation Change”, created specifically for this age group. Gain a new perspective on how self-worth and financial responsibility are closely linked to your relationship with God. Class meets from 9:15 – 10:15am in the Youth Room each Sunday morning.

Dinner Needed: If you, your family, or small group would be able to provide a meal for an upcoming UMYF meeting, please contact Elizabeth at econnell@hibbenumc.org or 884-9761. Meals are needed for 20 people, served at 6pm on the following dates: October 7, 14, and 21. This is a great way to provide meaningful support of Hibben’s youth ministry.

Youth Music Practice: If you have even one single musical bone in your body, your talent is needed at youth music practice today from 4:30 – 6pm. With the help of Joe Rhyne, we’ll continue preparing 3 songs to be offered during worship at The Well on October 14. Last week’s practice was awesome! Bring your instrument and/or voice and join in!

Pitch in! The Youth and Children's Ministries at Hibben have been challenged to collect 600 toys for Hibben's Operation Christmas Child packing party on October 28.  That means we have about 1 month, and a lot of collecting to do!  How can you help?  You can donate gently used toys of your own, you can purchase small toys (no military themed, please), or you can continue to give generously during Sunday School offering.  Pitch in today and help us reach our goal!

Youth News, 9/20

UMYF this Sunday: All 7th – 12th graders are invited to the CLLC tonight from 6-8pm. BRING YOUR BIBLE so you can open it and read it after dinner and games. Fun for all, and a stretch for you brain and your faith!

Sunday School "Breakfast Sunday"! After 5-weeks of lessons and studying the Bible, this Sunday during Sunday School will be a chance to kick back, relax, and enjoy some breakfast with your friends.  Doughnuts will be provided, and it's up to you guys to bring the rest!  Pitch in with some juice, milk, get fancy and bring breakfast casserole, fruit, muffins, or your other favorite-but-slightly-weird breakfast treat.  All 7th - 12th graders will meet in the YOUTH ROOM in the CLLC from 9:15 - 10:15am.  See you there!

Get Involved!  If you haven't been at UMYF lately, you missed a chance to sign-up to get involved in all aspects of worship services at Hibben.  Instead of having one "Youth Sunday" this year, we are attempting to make every Sunday Youth Sunday!  Would you like to get involved in ushering, greeting, scripture reading, acolyting, hosting at The Well (providing refreshments), helping with Children's Church, sharing about your faith journey (like Salkehatchie or other mission projects)?  If so, talk with Elizabeth (884-9761 or econnell@hibbenumc.org) to get involved.  GET OFF THE PEW!

Ski Trip Survey:  You may notice a "poll" at the top of the H.Y.P.E.R. this week.  Please take a moment to vote and express your interest level in a ski trip in January 2013.  The same survey can be found on the UMYF Facebook page.  Tentative plans include a trip January 18-21, cost would be about $300 per person.  Other details TBD - the first step is to gauge interest!  If you'd rather, you can e-mail your thoughts to Elizabeth (econnell@hibbenumc.org).

Rally in the Park: Final RSVP's for the Charleston District Youth Rally are DUE!  The rally will take place at James Island Count Park on Saturday, September 29 from 1:30 - 6pm.  Cost is $5 per person and includes outdoor activities, dinner, and a special worship service (including band, rapper, and speaker!).  If you are interested in attending, please e-mail Elizabeth (econnell@hibbenumc.org) NOW so we can give our head count to the event organizers.

Meals Needed:  A huge thanks to those of you who have volunteered to provide dinner for UMYF meetings!  Many of our dates have been filled, but there are still some opportunities available.  If your family could provide dinner for around 20 people at 6pm on one of the following dates, please let me know:  October 7, October 14, October 21.

Youth News, 9/12

There are lots of announcements this week, so extra bonus points to you if you read all the way to the end.  And everyone could use a few more bonus points, couldn't they?

UMYF this Sunday (9/16): Put on your game face and get ready for a night of Minute-To-Win-It style games!  All 7th - 12th graders are invited to the CLLC from 6-8pm.  We'll have dinner and then compete our little hearts in a variety of ridiculous games.  You may not ever make it to the Olympics by mastering these games, but you could win a candy bar, so there's that...

Youth Band Practice!  If you have any interest at all in participating in playing or singing music at an upcoming worship service, please plan to come to the CLLC THIS SUNDAY (9/16) at 4:30pm.  This will be the first meeting of what we hope will become a great way for you to get involved in worship leadership.  Please bring your instrument, your voice, your ideas, and your patience!  A big thanks to Joe Rhyne for his passion for this project.  Our goal is to have several songs prepared for the October 14 service at The Well.

Get Involved!  If you weren't at UMYF this past Sunday (9/9), you missed a chance to sign-up to get involved in all aspects of worship services at Hibben.

Rally in the Park: Final RSVP's for the Charleston District Youth Rally are due by Wednesday, September 19.  The rally will take place at James Island Count Park on Saturday, September 29 from noon - 6pm.  Cost is $5 per person and includes outdoor activities, dinner, and a special worship service (including band, rapper, and speaker!).  If you are interested in attending, please e-mail Elizabeth (econnell@hibbenumc.org) before 9/19 so we can give our head count to the event organizers.

Operation Christmas Child Involvement! Our toy gathering for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes has officially begun! Your first challenge: look through your toy chests and the dark corners of your closets. If you have “GENTLY USED”, “LIKE NEW” matchbox cars, small stuffed animals (like Beanie Babies), or long forgotten Legos, donate them to this wonderful cause. Any small toy in good condition will brighten the lives of children around the world. Collection boxes can be found near all children and youth Sunday School classrooms.

Also, remember that any offering you bring to Sunday School on Sunday mornings will be used to support the purchase of shoebox gifts for Hibben's Packing Party on October 28.  Bring your spare change or leftover lunch money and plan to give generously.

(And finally, you there.  Yes, you.  The one STILL reading this post.  Bless your soul.  1,000 bonus points for you.  While sadly these points can't really be redeemed for anything, it's my way of showing how much I appreciate you!)
