UMYF News Update, 8/27

UMYF This Sunday: Listen, I KNOW you've got opinions. Wouldn't it be nice if someone LISTENED to them? This Sunday night is your chance! Come to UMYF from 6 - 8pm and help us put the finishing touches on an amazing and exciting Fall/Winter 2009 calendar. Among the decisions we'll be making: Ski Trip vs. Revolution, youth room improvements, and which charities you'd like to support. Come and tell us what you think and what you want to do! Oh, and we'll also play games and eat.

"Everything" Skit: Becky Thompson is organizing an amazing skit that will performed at MYF on September 30 and we'd love for YOU to get involved. Please e-mail Becky for more information: thompsonb@bellsouth.net

Mission Trip Meeting: Next summer, members from Hibben will be going to Belize for a mission trip. If you think you might be interested in going, please plan to attend an informational meeting THIS SUNDAY after the 10:30 service to get the details. If you are 14 or older, you do not have to have a parent travel with you. Those under 14 will need a parent or guardian. This promises to be an unforgettable and life changing trip!

Revolve Event: Attention ladies! Don't forget to mark your calendar for October 2 - 3 for the Revolve event in Charlotte. Check out the video by clicking here. Cost is $100 - sign up now because space is limited! E-mail (eskogman@hibbenumc.org) or call (813-8700) Elizabeth today.

Youth RALLY Re-cap

We had a blast at the District Youth Rally last week at Stallsville UMC in Summerville. Over 85 youth from 7 churches attended! We played some great new games, ate hot dogs (!), heard a wonderful speaker and enjoyed great music. A special thanks to David Lupo for these photos. I was too busy playing games!

Getting ready to play:
The rules of this game: No Talking. But, as usual, technology wins and the cell phone came in handy! Here's Davis and Bill Dorfner...cheating... : )

Up next, Will hanging on for dear life during a game of "Drop the Keys". This was a FUN game. One that we'll definitely play sometime soon!

And finally, we divided into groups and devised a plan to keep an egg from breaking when dropped from 7 feet. Cotton balls, bubble wrap and straws (?) helped us complete the task. Here's Jake scheming with his group:

And Donny, doing the same:

And Sarah, who bravely climbed the ladder to be her group's egg dropper. In the end, her team emerged victorious with two successful drops. Nice going!

After the dust settled from all the games, we moved to the sanctuary for some worship time. I hope everyone enjoyed the evening and left feeling energized and excited about the new school year!

The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth

We had a great time talking about the TRUTH last Sunday at MYF. We played "Two Truths and A Lie", during which we learned Mercer has never had braces (have you seen her perfectly straight teeth?!?!) and laughed over Jess's close encounter with a squirrel (yikes!).

Then, we played a popular card game ("Baloney Sandwich" or "I Think You're Lying") that requires players to stretch the truth and display their best poker faces.

Then, we discussed why people lie, if it's ever ok to lie, and how to tell the truth even when it's hard.
Speaking of telling the truth - I've had a hard time this week. YOU try planning a surprise birthday party for a friend without telling a fib or two! Which raises the question: Is it ok for me to lie for the sake of the surprise? Discuss amongst yourselves!

UMYF News!

Did you know that the average person lies 13 times each week? It's true! Join us this Sunday night (August 9) from 6 - 8 in the CLLC. We'll play games that encourage you to lie (gasp!), talk about telling the truth (even when it's hard!), and uncover the truth about lying. Be there!

BOAT DAY!

You asked for it! It's Boat Day 2009, on Sunday, August 16 from 1:30 - 5:30. Have you RSVP'd yet? No? Well, what are you waiting for?!?!

If you plan to attend Boat Day, you MUST let Elizabeth know BY THIS WEDNESDAY (August 12) so we're sure to have adequate boats, captains, life jackets, food, chaperones...you get the picture. Please e-mail me (eskogman@hibbenumc.org) or call me (813-8700) before August 12 to sign-up. All participants (Hibben members and guests) must have a completed waiver, too.
