Youth News, 11/15

UMYF This Sunday (11/18)! This quote from one of America’s most favorite cartoon characters will give you a clue about this Sunday's UMYF meeting: “We’ve got another holiday to worry about. It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us.” His little sister replies, “I haven’t even finished eating all my Halloween candy yet!” All 7th – 12th graders are invited to rediscover just how meaningful Thanksgiving can be, this Sunday from 6-8pm in the CLLC.

Calendar notes: UMYF will have a special meeting from 5:30 – 8pm on 11/25 – please note the earlier start time! Also, there will be no UMYF on December 2.

Safe Sanctuary revision: If you're a teen who likes to help in children's church or the nursery, this one's for you!  We've put a temporary hold on your participation with these ministries until we can offer a teen version of Safe Sanctuary training for you.  I'm working now on plans for short, basic training that will allow you to continue serving in all the ways you like.  Stay tuned for details, and until then enjoy a short "vacation" from volunteering with these ministries.

Feeding of the Multitudes:  Start a meaningful new tradition this Thanksgiving season by volunteering with your family at the Mt. Pleasant Feeding of the Multitudes on Saturday, November 18.  Along with other local churches, Hibben will be feeding a traditional Thanksgiving meal to our community members who need a helping hand.  Our "shift" is from 2-4pm and volunteers of all ages are needed for face painting, wait staff, game leaders for the children, food service, food prep, set-up and clean-up.  Volunteer shifts are also needed for food prep on Friday (11/17) and earlier in the day on Saturday (11/18).  Contact Jennifer Roberts (jcsroberts@yahoo.com or 843-270-1161) with questions or to sign up!

Trip to Charlotte: 3 spots remain for our trip to volunteer at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center in Charlotte, NC on December 1.  At the processing center, we’ll work to inspect and prepare the shoe boxes for shipment overseas. These volunteer spots are highly sought after by churches throughout the region, so huge thanks to Pam Thesing for securing space for Hibben’s youth.  Here are the trip highlights:
  • Fundraising opportunities are available to offset trip cost. See Elizabeth for details.
  • We’ll depart at 9:00am on Saturday, December 1 and return to Hibben around 4pm on Sunday, December 2.
  • We’ll have afternoon free time on Saturday before working our shift at the processing center from 6-10pm.
  • Cost per person is $60.
The trip is now open to all ages!  Sign up today.  I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at the processing center twice before, and it really is an amazing and powerful experience. Plus, it’s a BLAST, too! Sign-up today!

Church-wide SKI TRIP: There are only 11 more days until the registration deadline!  You must pay the deposit or request fundraising to save your space.  All Hibben members and friends are invited to join in the fun of our annual ski trip, happening January 18 - 21 in Winterplace, WV. Cost per person is $275 and includes lodging, equipment rental, lift tickets, 5 meals, and transportation. Discounts are available for those under 12 years of age and for non-skiiers. More information and registration forms can be found on the bulletin board by the copy room or by e-mailing Elizabeth at econnell@hibbenumc.org. A non-refundable deposit of $145 is due by Nov. 25 with the balance of $130 due by Dec. 16. FUNDRAISING IS AVAILABLE! Register today!
